In the American South, black-eyed peas are traditionally eaten on New Year's Day to invite good fortune in the year ahead, often as Hoppin' John, with rice and pork. Rancho Gordo's Super Lucky edition celebrates that tradition. Technically a cowpea rather than a true pea, this small, ivory-colored legume has a characteristic black eye, a delicate earthy flavor and a tender texture. Unlike many dried beans, black-eyed peas cook relatively quickly and produce a lovely broth. Good luck needn't be limited to January.
