Related to the Sichuan peppercorn, Sansho Japanese pepper has a citrusy flavor and a similar numbing effect. These little green seed pods grow on the Japanese prickly ash tree and are a classic flavoring for yakitori.
Sansho is especially good with eel and oily fishes.
