A little story about this truly exceptional Saffron hailing directly from Herat, Afghanistan.
This 'Red Gold' is harvested from a fall-blooming variety of the crocus flower. This hardy perennial that grows from bulbs and can withstand Afghanistan's harsh climate. The flowers, each containing three red stigmas that will become the spice, have to be picked by hand in the early morning, before the blossoms open to the sun.
*Accolades! The International Taste and Quality Institute based in Brussels has rated Afghan saffron as the best in the world for the fourth consecutive year. The rating was given after collecting around 300 saffron samples from around the world by the institute International.
